The 143rd New Year Sprint is due to be held at Musselburgh Racecourse, 6 miles east of Edinburgh, on Saturday 31st December 2011 and Sunday 1st January 2012.

The 110 metres New Year Sprint, with a £4000 first prize, will be supported by 90 metres open, 90 metres veterans, 90 metres youths, 60 metres youths age under 13 and 60 metres youths age under 16 event events. All events feature a handicap starting system.

The promoter is putting up a staggering £20,000 bonus for any scratch runner who can beat the World Professional Record of 11.14 secs over 120 yards (approximately 110 metres) set by the great George McNeill back in 1970. A time better than 11.34 secs will earn a £1000 reward and a time better than 11.24 secs will earn a £2000 bonus.

The Open events are open to men and women aged 16 years and over, whether professional or amateur. Amateurs may keep any prize money won. Stacey Johnson of Cannock and Stafford was the first women to finish in 35:05. Jenny Blizzard of Rotheram was 3rd in 35:26 but took the 5k cash bonus after a quick first half
