Flotrack's Best of 2013 - Performance of the Year
During the 2012 season in Monaco Asbel Kiprop became the first man to break 3:29 for 1500m since 2004 when both Bernard Lagat and Hicham El Guerrouj ran 3:27 in Zurich on August 6th. Kiprop went into the London Olympics as the favorite to win gold and defend his title, but injury hit and left him in the dust when the bell lap sounded. In 2013 Kiprop wanted to prove he was the best one of the best middle distance runners ever and it all started back in Monaco. Kiprop went out with pace makers immediately en route to a 3:27.72 which ranks #4 all-time behind the 3 best ever....El G, Lagat and Noureddine Morceli. Kiprop would go on to win the World Championships in Moscow to cap off the stellar 2013 campaign.
If that wasn't enough, the double Olympic Champ, Mo Farah, showed us something almost just as special. Farah sat back a few strides behind Kiprop the whole race but remained strong through the final stages of the race to break the British record of the race commentator, Steve Cram which was set back in 1985 (3:29.67). In what had seemed to be a drought, Farah became the first British 1500m runner to break 3:33 since 2004. The mark also moved Mo up to #6 all-time in the 1500
