2008-2009: Helped Oregon win its second straight NCAA Cross Country Championship as the DucksÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ No. 4 runner at the national meet. Finished 45th overall in his championships debut in 30:21.3. Varsity opener came at the Pac-10 Championships where he helped Oregon to its third straight title with his 11th place showing. Indoors Matt broke the school record in the mile running 3:57.92 (which was broken later that season by Galen Rupp). At NCAAs he finished 6th in the mile to help Oregon win the NCAA Indoor Team Title, the first in school histroy. Outdoors he ran the 7th fastest 1,500m in NCAA history with a 3:36.92 to lead the NCAA for 2009. He won the Pac-10 title in that event, but a foot injury kept him from running the event at NCAAs. He also ran a leg of Oregon's NCAA record setting 4xMile Relay during the season.
2007-08: After redshirting the outdoor NCAA season, won the 5,000 meters at the USA Junior Track & Field Championships in June, running 14:44.67. Advanced to the World Junior Championships, where he finished 11th in a personal-best 13:58.31. Indoors, placed fourth in the mile at the Husky Classic (4:00.26) and sixth in that event at the UW Indoor Invite (4:03.08). Was a member of the distance medley relay team that placed ninth at the NCAA Championships (9:36.80). Competed in two cross country races for Oregon. Claimed a top-30 finish at the Pac-10 Championships as a true freshman (27th, 23:46). Opened his collegiate career in late September at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
In high school, Matt placed 8th at the Foot Locker National Championships. At the Nike Outdoor National meet, Matt won the 2-mile in 8:41.55 (the third fastest HS time in history at that time). He also won the 1,500m at the Pan American Junior Championships.
